St. Mark

What do you see in the picture? Anyone know this man What is he holding in his hand? This is St. Mark. He wrote the shortest gospel in the New Testament of the bible. This is why he is holding a pen in his hand. He traveled to many places to talk about the Jesus. This "halo" above his head tell us that he is an important person. What animal is in the picture? A lion. Can anyone tell me what you think about when you see a lion? King of the jungle. Mark talked about Jesus being the King of men, so that is why he is pictured with a lion and sometimes as a lion. The wings on the lion tell us that he is a heavenly figure. One of the places that St Mark protects is Venice, Italy. (Here is a map of Italy with Venice highlighted) In Venice every year before Lent people dress up in masks to celebrate. Today we are going to celebrate by making a mask of a lion.

Craft: Lion mask

Cut out, add colors, yarn for the hair, and add ribbons to tie on the mask. If others are done they may color their print outs about lions.

Sign language story: The lion and the mouse.

One day a lion was awakened from his sleep by a little mouse walking over his face. The lion woke up angry, and caught the little mouse by the tail. Just as the mighty lion was about to eat the little mouse. The little mouse pleaded for his life. My promise to you is this if you need me at any time roar, and I will help you. The lion being king of the jungle laughed at the thought of a little mouse helping a mighty lion. The lion laughed so hard he let the mouse go.

One day 2 hunters were in the jungle, and they captured the mighty lion in a net. The mighty lion roared, and the little mouse ran to help the mighty lion. The little mouse gnawed through the net, and the mighty lion was free. The mighty lion realized size is not important.

Drama:

We add the characters (Mouse, lion, and 2 hunters) to a hat. The children draw out a character and act as the character with no words. The other children then guess what character the children are acting as.

Song: Italian Uno, Due, Tre

Uno, Due, Tre, la Peppina fa il caffe, Fa il caffe di cioccoltata,La Peppina I'enamorata

One, two, three,Peppina is making coffee,She makes coffee of chocolate,Peppina is in love

Bible story:

Jesus witnessed people giving money, but the person he notices the most is the old, thin woman wearing rags, and holes in her shoes. She had two coins and that was everything she had.

Moral: Even though we are not Saints we too make a difference in lives of others, and we can always take the time to ask if there is anything we can do for someone else.

Parents, if you would like to extend the lesson here are some great things to do…
